Revolutionary Watches: 30 Groundbreaking Timepieces – Richard Mille RM 027 Tourbillon (Rafael Nadal Edition)
This year marks the 20th anniversary of *Revolution* magazine. For two decades, we've documented watches, people, and ideas, witnessing an extraordinary story of how an ancient craft has been revitalized and is moving into the 21st century while preserving its essence. To celebrate this milestone, we've selected over 100 individuals and events that, in our view, have defined this era.
In 2010, the RM 027 debuted on the sports field. More than a timepiece, it was a manifesto: haute horlogerie crafted for the most formidable players. It features an ultra-precise case made of carbon nanofiber, the same material used in Mille's RM 006 for Felipe Massa; and it uses premium acrylic glass instead of sapphire crystal, as sapphire would be too heavy. The case back, bezel, and sides are integrated into a single piece, ensuring the watch's exceptional lightness. Its manual-winding RM 027 movement is crafted from high-tech materials, such as the LITAL alloy previously used by Miller in the RM 009. LITAL is a high-performance lithium-aluminum alloy originally developed for the aerospace industry and used in the manufacture of products like the Airbus A380, rockets, and Formula 1 cars.

The RM 027 features an ultra-lightweight polycarbonate strap, making it the world's lightest mechanical watch at its launch. Weighing only 20 grams, it's incredibly light, perhaps explaining why Rafael Nadal called it his "second skin" and wore it both on and off the court. He indeed won titles at major tournaments—the French Open, Wimbledon, and Flushing Meadows. The tourbillon in the RM 027 is connected to the case via a skeletonized bridge, further enhancing its stunning appeal (a double entendre, please excuse the ambiguity).
But ultimately, the RM 027 makes our list because it transcends its high-tech specifications and astonishing technological innovation. With the RM 027, Richard Mille redefined haute horlogerie, bringing it from the sidelines to the center of the court. He proved that his $500,000 high-performance timepiece was designed for competitive action and could withstand any test—requiring no special care. Investing thousands of hours in material development, rigorously testing the watch, and declaring its exceptional quality is certainly impressive. But Richard Mille demonstrated its excellence through action—Nadal wore the RM 027, showcasing his signature two-handed backhand and legendary forehand in intense matches against the world's top players, under the watchful eyes of spectators, television cameras, and international media. The RM 027 Rafael Nadal watch truly lived up to its name.
Subsequent generations continued to improve performance. The RM 27-01 features a suspended movement supported by a steel cable only 0.35 mm thick, capable of absorbing shocks up to 5,000g. The RM 27-02 introduced RM's signature unibody case construction, integrating the case and baseplate into a single unit, inspired by racing car chassis. The RM 27-03, with its striking red color scheme, boasted a shock resistance of up to 10,000g, the highest among tourbillon watches at the time. The RM 27-04 improved upon the RM 27-01's suspended design, employing a micro-mesh cable system inspired by tennis racket strings. Finally, the RM 27-05, released last May, concluded the series. It featured the ultra-thin RM UP-01 movement and a suspended flying tourbillon without a top bridge. Thanks to bold material innovations, this watch weighed only 11.5 grams without the strap, remaining the brand's lightest mechanical timepiece.
